This is an excellent live show from the Kirov opera house in Moscow. Tchaikovsky's music is wonderful, especially the soprano/mezzo duet. Gegam Grigorian has a nice-sounding, powerful voice, and he portrays the gambler's downfall well. Maria Gulegina has a luscious voice, and she makes Liza very naive. Two more famous singers have smaller roles- Olga Borodina and Sergei Leiferkus are Pauline and Tomsky. Neither of their characters take part in the action. Leiferkus sings one song and serves as a narrator, and Borodina sings a song and a duet. Gergiev and the orchestra and chorus are excellent. The long ballet in Act 2 is very nice, as are the sets and costumes.
